Najim A. Al-Masoudi born in Basrah, Iraq and received his B.Sc. in chemistry (1972); M.Sc. in organic chemistry (1975) from the University of Basrah, and Ph.D. in organic chemistry (Chemistry of 5-thio-D-Hexoses) from University of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK (1980) under supervision of Dr. Niel Hughes.
During 1981-1994, he was a member of chemistry department of Basrah University as a lecturer, assistance professor, where he became a full professor at 1992 of organic and medicinal chemistry, after his independent career by leading a research group in designing of the antiviral agents.
In 1988, he had been awarded two years fellowship by the German Foundation, Alexander von Humboldt, to work with Professor Dr. Dr. h.c. Pfleiderer of Konstanz University (Germany) in the field of nucleic acids and heterocyclic chemistry, and as a result of this fruitful collaboration, and scientific experience, he had taken the opportunity to lead his own research group.
